Giveaway! A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California by Keli Gwyn!!

Welcome to Writing for Christ Keli Gwyn, it is great to have you here! Do you have an interesting fact about yourself the average reader probably doesn’t know?

It’s great to be here, Casey. I enjoy visiting Writing for Christ and interacting with your blog’s readers.

An interesting fact few know about me? Let me see. OK. Got it. I played Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I’m no actor, as my performance proved. Thankfully my dismal debut as a thespian took place in sixth grade before a very small audience of doting parents. The best part was that I got to wear my mom’s flowing black peignoir set. I might have forgotten all my lines, but I looked good. :-)

Do you have a favorite genre to read/write?

Inspirational historical romance!

Do you have a nugget of writing advice that has completely changed how you view writing?

Have fun! I know. Profound, right?

When I first began writing and knew diddlysquat about how to craft a marketable story, I poured words on the page with abandon. And it was fun! Then I discovered the online writing community, bought craft books, read blogs, attended conference workshops, etc. I tried to incorporate everything I’d learned in my stories, and writing lost its thrill. Only when I gave myself permission to let my first drafts flow freely, did I rediscover the joy of writing.

5 things you love?

The Lord

My family

Writing

Sweet tea

Eating out—often :-)

What do you enjoy most about being a published author?

Having people stop me in the street to ask about my book. Oh, you mean for real and not in my dreams, right? :-) I like being able to share my stories with readers, stories that honor the Lord as well as entertain.

Places for readers to learn more about you?

My cyber home, complete with parlor and library: www.keligwyn.com

Thank you for being with us today!

Thanks for having me, Casey. And if I may, I’d like to end by asking your readers a question.

    1. Dawn,

Like you, I enjoy stories set in California. I'm a native of the Golden State and live in the heart of California's Gold Country. El Dorado is located just few miles from where I live. It was a bustling town in 1870, when A Bride Opens Shop takes place. Today it's a sleepy suburb that is home to some really nice people. I included a video on my website's Story Ideas page filmed in El Dorado, so you could get a peek at the town there if you're interested. http://keligwyn.com/study/story-ideas/

  5. Hi Casey and Keli! Congratulations on your new book Keli!
The only play I remember being in was called Down by the Creekside. I was about seven. It was a Christian musical and the group traveled to different churches to perform. What I remember it went great and was a lot of fun.

  8. Hi Casey and Keli, Yes, I have performed in plays and church performances. The neat thing is when you have your stage makeup on and begin to walk as the character and you are transformed from yourself to them. It is magical when that happens.

Sounds like you've had some great times performing. What were some of your roles, and do you have a favorite? Is there one you haven't played but would love to?

      Delete
    2. My most favorite was being an old woman, bent over with a forked tree limb for a cane. Walking with the aid of a young woman on the other side, the moment we began walking I became my character. It was amazing. Two others I enjoyed were off-stage; a mime on a missions trip to Grenada, West Indies, and "Buttons the clown" in a festival we "Missions-Minded Maidens" had at a children's school in El Carmen, Mexico. These were my favorites because I didn't have to memorize lines! I auditioned for an "Oklahoma" musical in community theatre as Ado Annie, singing "I caan't say no" in a high squeaky voice. I wasn't chosen and did props instead. I love wearing cowboy boots and thought that would be a great spot. One I think of that was funny, looking back, was forgetting my lines in a skit to cue someone to come in from off stage. I spoke about her instead and said loudly, "Are you out there?" (hoping she would come on) and she answered, "Yes." She never did get on stage! That was before line cues on a headset.

She’s safe now, but I can’t begin to imagine how she must feel. If you could lift up the others in similar situations, that would be great. And please include the firefighters battling the many fires raging throughout the West. My agent, Rachelle Gardner’s, husband is one of them on the front lines at the Colorado Springs fire. Thank you.

I think it's great that you've been on stage numerous times. You have sooo much talent and delight audiences, I'm sure. With the amazing singing voice God gave you, I'm guessing some of your roles were in musicals. Am I right? Any I would know?

      Delete
    2. Yes, I've done musicals...I love them! Haven't done as many as I'd like, but I've been in Grease, The Taffetas, Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha, and Godspell. :)

    3. Wow, Lindsay! You've been in some great shows. Who did you play in Grease and Man of La Mancha?

  11. Shakespeare! Wow, Keli! That must have been a lot of lines to memorize, as Puck’s part is quite lengthy.

I actually produced and put on a play based on The Hiding Place, by Corrie Ten Boom. There was about six of us doing the whole project and I played several bit roles. It was a lot of fun and I wrote most of the play, so that was fun too.

Congrats on your upcoming book release! I can’t wait to read it!!

    1. Amanda,

My experience performing the role of Puck was so traumatizing (and humiliating) that I must have blocked much of it from my mind because I can't recall much about it. Since we were only in the sixth grade, I'm guessing we only performed a portion of the play.

How exciting to have written, produced, directed (?), and performed in a play about Corrie Ten Boom. What an accomplishment. Did you get video footage?

Thanks for taking time out of your day to visit my site. I'm thrilled with the work my talented web designer did. He captured my vision for it beautifully.

My memories of that long-ago day when we performed the play are fuzzy at best. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that our teacher chose just a few scenes for us to act out. I wasn't on stage long, which was probably a very good thing, given my super-sized case of stage fright.

My love of sweet tea comes from my mom, who was raised in Texas. Y'all are onto something mighty tasty there. =)

I remember having a pitcher of sweet tea in the refrigerator all summer long. My mom's was so sweet it resembled syrup. I don't add nearly as much sugar as she used to--in deference to my waistline--but it's still a refreshing drink, one I enjoy year 'round.

    1. Apple Blossom,

There's nothing quite like being in a Christmas play, is there? I got to be a doll and wear a really frilly blue dress when I was in third grade. I remember walking around in a little circle with stiff arms and legs. Being the "me too" little sister sounds like more fun.

  63. What a fun play to be in! Puck's character is pretty mischivious and witty, which I think would be hard to play at the age. Thanks for the giveaway! The book sound fabulous and I like the cover. :)

    1. Tressa,

Puck was certainly a challenging role for me, that's for sure. At that age I was so not mischievous or witty. I was pretty much a stick in the mud. Thankfully I've loosened up as I've aged, er, make that matured.

  64. I was in a few church Christmas plays growing up and then in 5th grade my class did a skit to go along with a song.
Thanks for the giveaway! Sounds like a fun book!

How fun that you got to perform as a child both in plays and in a skit. Those experiences do s-t-r-e-t-c-h us, don't they, and provide us with some fun memories?

    1. Megan,

I had such fun adding the musical element to the story and was thrilled to see that my publisher included the violin my heroine plays on the cover. They used it as the scene break dingbat as well. Is that cool, or what?

Since you're into music, I'll tell you that I fell in love with classical music while writing this story. My favorite piece, which you'll see in the story, is Vivaldi's Four Seasons. According to iTunes, I've listened to it over 1,000 times on my computer--and that doesn't count the hundreds of times I've played it in my SportTrac. I'm hopelessly addicted to it.

    1. Doreen,

My book's official release date is July 1. It will begin to appear in stores and libraries some time in the next couple of weeks. It's available for pre-order from many of the online booksellers now and will be shipping soon after the release date.

If you visit my website (address and link in Casey's post above) and go to the Contests and Giveaways page found in The Press Room, you'll find a list of all the places giving away a copy of the book. Since I'm eager for readers to enjoy the story, there are quite a few. :-)

I am a follower. Only plays I was in were the Christmas plays at church. Once when I was little, about 5 or 6 , my dad told me not to go to sleep after we had exited the stage and sat down next to our parents. Being half asleep already, I said but I know the end. Everyone laughed . I have been reminded of this at every church christmas play since for the last 50 plus years.

    1. Pam,

What a cute story. I know. Easy for me to say since I'm only hearing it for the first time, right? It's funny how some things we say as children so stick in the minds of the adults that we hear about the over and over again.

  79. Dianne,

Casey is awesome! I know you'd love her if you could meet her. She bubbles over with enthusiasm, so much so that she's been known to dance on a chair at a writers conference--a memorable moment in her life she'll never forget, especially since we love to remind her about it. =)

I think it's cool that you were able to act in years past. Any chance you could get involved with community theater now?

  80. I have taken part in several Easter and Christmas productions at church. In jr. high I was in the drama club. In high school I took part in The Pajama Game. In each of theseI had only minor parts which I emjoyed playing. It was fun to step out of myself and be someone else for a while.
