Fan Fiction Friday...Let's Talk: Karen Witemeyer's Newest Cover

I blinked in surprise to see the cover change on Karen Witemeyer's latest novel, (a book I have preordered already!)

I had the chance to hop over to her lunch table at ACFW this last year when I saw her showing it off to rest of the authors at the table like a proud mama.

I honestly wasn't exactly sure...I knew I really liked it, and it's cute! And we could finally see a WHOLE FACE on her characters! I admit I'm getting tired of the cut-off-at-the-nose cover images so a full face is always a pleasure.

BUT Bethany House wasn't done and they've changed her cover. Check it out!

The frothy pink is SUPER cute!! But I have to admit the heroine looks like a little girl to me. So I'm torn...take the uber-cute pink and fun cover with the little girl face, or the more plain style with full character features.

What say you?

  1. I like the idea that the character's face is showing in the previous cover, but I don't think they picked a good facial expression. The combo of the eyes & the praying hands comes across as a little cheesy.

I love the dress on the new cover & the glimpse of the hero, but I wish the the shot showed her face. I also wonder if she was leaning toward him a little bit, instead of away, if that would look better.

    1. Agree, Beth. I loved the character's expression, but didn't quite understand the praying hands, plus the hero wasn't nearly as handsome as previous ones. ;-)

  2. The new cover is SUCH A HUGE IMPROVEMENT over the first IMO. I am SO thankful they changed it. That first cover was...bleh.

    1. THe first cover really didn't fit her previous covers. They have done a pretty structured similarity between them all.

  3. I kind of like cut-off faces because I like to imagine them myself, but I really like the preacher in ropes looking back. Too funny and then the girl in a prayerful yet mischievous state. So torn myself! I would have liked to have seen the rope between her prayerful hands. Stealing and praying. Like taking matters into her own hands and knowing God really is the one in control. That would have been perfect to me! :) But alas, I am not a book cover designer. lol

    1. You should be! What fun it would be to play with different options. I love what you dreamt up. Maybe you should call up BH and offer cover advice in your awesome Southern drawl. :)

    2. Jessica, you stole the words right out of my mouth! Those were my thoughts exactly about the ropes between her hands and liking the preacher in ropes looking back.

Casey, I agree. Jessica should definitely consider a job in cover design. She's got some great ideas!

    1. On the young face? Yeah, it's a wee bit of a distraction for me.

  5. I guess there is something to be said for both covers. I like the full faces and definitely the girl at least looks old enough to marry! I agree with you on the second cover that the girl looks a bit young, but the dress is awesome! I'm definitely a Karen Witemeyer fan! I just finished Short-Straw Bride and loved it!

    1. Yes! THe dress is awesome! And I know what you mean, no matter the cover, I'm reading the STORY!

  6. Oh my word!
Yes!! The second cover is WAY better!
I do like how the preacher's hands are tied on the first cover though.
And I do see what you mean about her looking really young on the second.

If I could chose though I would go with the second.

    1. Makes you wonder what's going to happen later in the book, don't you? :)

  7. The second cover does fall in line more with her previous covers, so I understand the changes. And the praying hands pose is a bit cliched for me.

    1. Yes, the second definitely is a better fit.

  8. I love the newer cover, it is lively & fun. The older cover seems a little stodgy or something. :)

  9. I almost wished they would have combined the two! I really like the rope idea in the first one. If they could have kept the rope and used that to pull him instead of her just pulling on his sleeve. That would have been more "stealing" to me. The pulling on the shirt says more "Nagging the Preaching" in my opinion! Even so, I still prefer the second one.

  10. I love both. :) But I have to say, the second one is my fave. I love the color and the pose of the characters, even if you don't see the faces...and yeah, it really matches her others, too. I love covers, but oh the stories inside Karen's books...even better! :)

  11. Personally, I like a full face on a book cover. But the preacher in the first cover somewhat bugs me and the fact that his hands are tied behind his back. But the latest cover is also nice. It's an improvement to the preacher but I agree with you about the girl looking too young. It's funny how I've heard the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" over and over yet I can't help but do it :)

  13. I really like the new cover. It is so....Karen Witemeyer! The first one was just way too blah. I would like more face...but then the cut off one does give you space to imagine. And I love the pink dress! And the way shes pulling his sleeve......but maybe she needs to yank it a little more? Overall I love it, and I love Karen Witemeyer. I have all of her books and will keep buying!

  14. I have to be honest and say neither one is appealing to me. The first is just out totally. I don't like the girls expression or the praying hands and it doesn't match the other book covers. The second one would do but the little we see of the girl's face is WAY too young! She looks like a 12 yr old playing dress up. Wonder why they went with such a young girl?

    1. Totally with you on this one, Anne! The first one makes it appear as though the book is all going to be silly and immature -- the second cover with the young girl makes it appear the same.

  15. Second picture, definitely! LOVE the cut-off angle of her books. And I don't really like the guy in the first book cover...lol

  16. Neither one is my favorite...definitely don't like the first. I like to imagine the characters' faces

  17. I think the second cover the the best one because it shows that she has his shirt sleeve trying to keep him. The first one has him tied with a rope and that not a good one for a preacher. Thank you .Norma

  18. Too bad we can't pick the best of both covers. Like the full faces on cover 1 and the rope. Don't care for the too young girl on the cover 2, but love her dress.
