Giveaway! After All by Deborah Raney

Welcome to Writing for Christ, Deborah Raney, it is great to have you here! Do you have an interesting fact about yourself the average reader probably doesn’t know?

I'm the oldest of five children, 4 girls and a boy, who married the oldest of 4 boys and a girl! One of my sisters even dated one of Ken's brothers for a while.

Do you have a favorite genre to read/write?

I love reading the genre I write, women's fiction. There's something very affirming about reading about women much like me, and exploring why our faith gives us hope for the future and tools to live life with integrity and with incredible joy––sometimes despite our circumstances.

Do you have a nugget of writing advice that has completely changed how you view writing?

My "nugget" is something I wrote a few years ago for a collection one of my writers groups produced called What the Wind Picked Up:

The most valuable lesson I've learned about the writer's life is that it is full of ups and downs. In your own eyes, you will never, ever "arrive." Some months you'll be on top and feel wonderful about how things are going; other months you'll be sure your career is over. The sooner you accept that this is normal––and just show up at your desk anyway, day after day after day––the more likely you are to start having more ups than downs. Besides, it's not about you anyway. Though the act of writing may be therapeutic for the writer, a book doesn't really come to life until it's read by someone else. If God uses your story to bring joy or comfort or reproof or wisdom to even one other life, you are a success in the eyes of the only One who matters.
––Deborah Raney, author of The Hanover Falls Novels

Dancing, Dating and Waiting Part 2

Read part 1 here.

Two things I've never done before: I've never stayed out until 2 in the morning.

And I've never had a guy ask for my number.

Push them eyeballs back into their sockets! That is just plain unseemly. I might be young and live in the boonies,I just live in a bubble. Or so said guy told me. What's your point?

And no, I can't even pretend to dance like her... ;-)
Several weeks ago, I attended a barn/country dance with a couple other gals and stayed out until two in the morning. ((I like to say that just for the shock factor. ;-)) In between having all the guys begging (snort) me to dance, I took the 30% of my insecure self to the edge of the gym and enjoyed watching the much better dancers cut up the floor.

You have to understand my community. While I live in "town" there are scattered clusters of people all over our county. So while I live an hour away, most of these people don't know me. And I don't know them, except by either family name or reputation. ;-)

It's a comfortable setting. People laughing, dancing and having a good time. (some have too good of a time...) and visiting with people I'd never met before. So when I ended up next to a young man, only the two of us on the bleachers while our visiting companions jumped up to dance, we chatted. Asked each other what we did.

Then (name omitted to protect the innocent) who has the total Tall, Dark and Handsome thing going, leans in just a bit and asks after I made mention about the lateness of the hour..."So, what do you like to do?"

"Um...write?"

We were talking about social events, and thank goodness he thought it actually neat that I like to write, but really, this has been the only event I've ever attended without my family and stayed out so late. That 2 a.m. thing again.

"You really grew up in a bubble didn't you?"

"I was homeschooled." (And very proud of it, I take no apologies there. ;-)

Conversation ebbed and flowed, laughed and danced the last to final song. As we headed back to the bleachers and settled in, he leans in (really he had to, the music was loud) and asked, "So what would a guy need to do to get your number to maybe read some of your writing?"

Pause.

Um...

What?

I've given my number away one time before; yeah it wasn't so great to try to evangelize to someone when they just want to call for other reasons. Not a good equation.

So when he asked, it was like I got flashbacks. I might come on too strong. I might sound like the typical "girl-wants-to-get-rich-quick" scheme, but really what I want is the man who desires my heart second only after God. So I took a deep breath, smiled and said...

"You know, if you really want to get in touch with me, you're going to have to call my dad first."

"Okay." His phone is still open.

"It won't be easy."

Be afraid, be v.e.r.y. afraid.

Phone still open, finger still poised, but a bit of the edge gone.

"You can call him at his work and talk to him if you want, but he's my gatekeeper and that's how I like it."

I couldn't tell if he swallowed hard or not. But still I passed on the numbers. Told him to ask for David.

"I guess if I'm serious, I'll call."

"Yep, that's right."

Did you just hear that loud exhale? Yeah, that was me, moving the ocean. Do I want him to call? Yes. Absolutely! There was something about him I liked. Kind, proper, but a whole lot of other things the Lord would have to work on.

Does my heart struggle to turn that dream loose of someone actually being interested enough to call? Baby, does it ever! Have I had to let it go? Every. Single. Day.

Like pulling teeth from the bottom of my feet, but you know what I realized recently after being slapped with this experience? I don't want someone not serious. Should I apologize for laying all my cards on the table? For being upfront and honest, making him call Daddy before he can talk to me? No. I won't apologize. I learned about what I do and don't want to say next time, but I won't apologize.

My future husband, future courtships, etc, must be serious. Because I am. I don't take this lightly. I don't date for the "joy" or "fun" of it.

That doesn't mean my heart doesn't want him to call. That I wouldn't like to get to know him better. Quite the opposite, but no matter how many times the beat of my heart jacks up, waiting for that call that probably will never come, I realize one more time I'm willing to wait.

Because I'm not willing to settle.

Don't. Settle.

It's a costly choice.

What a Drama! ~ Baroness by Susan May Warren ~ Review

That was the only thought running through my head on the close of that last page. And the drama isn’t ending any time soon!

“Baroness” picks up on the heels that “Heiress” left off. Though not a specific requirement that the reader have read book one before two, you’ll appreciate characters and their situations greater if you have.

Only Susan May Warren can take 361 pages and PACK it jam-full of angst, character depth, emotional turmoil and span several years and *not* give the reader whiplash.

The two story lines between Rosie and Lilly start together, diverge in the middle and eventually come back together. What happens in between is not for the faint of heart reader. There were moments when Lilly wing-walked that my heart literally dropped out of my chest.

Rosie’s story pierced my soul and I felt deeply for the struggles she walked through, trying to discover herself and since the third book is still about her journey, I’m eager to know what will happen with this lost woman.

Cover to cover, the historical is a great novel. Never slows down, keeps a consistent pace the entire book through and like I said at the top…what a drama! Not a slick soap opera drama, just the story of life. And how God takes our drama and uses it to mold, shape and guide us. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Rosie!

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through Litfuse for my copy to review.

Giveaway! Deep in the Heart by Staci Stallings

Welcome to Writing for Christ Staci Stallings, it is great to have you here! Do you have an interesting fact about yourself the average reader probably doesn’t know?

I graduated Valedictorian of my class in 1988.  Impressive, right?  Well, maybe the fact that there were only 23 kids in my whole class might have been a mitigating factor! :)

Do you have a favorite genre to read/write?

Reading-wise I love Christian non-fiction and most anything that deals with very practical spiritual-psychology.  Favorite authors include:  Steve McVey, Jeff VanVonderan, and John Ortberg.

Writing-wise, I love to write great stories that dig into why people do what they do.  I've found that 90% of our behavior is grounded in the "below the surface" part of the "iceberg" that we can't see.  If you've ever seen the picture of the iceberg where it shows the top and the bottom, you know that the small part on top that you do see is dwarfed by the huge part on the bottom that you don't.  I believe that people try to make the top 10% all impressive while desperately trying to hide the 90%.  I further believe that in a Christian relationship, what most connects us is when we are willing to be our 90% selves with someone else.  I further believe that the more we learn to do that with everyone, the happier and more at peace we are.  I hope that through the books and stories God gives me to tell, people learn to let just a little more of that 90% to show.

Do you have a nugget of writing advice that has completely changed how you view writing?

Trust God.  As a Christian writer, I'm so much more free because I know I don't have to have all the answers.  I simply trust that the Holy Spirit will give me the right piece of the puzzle at the right time.  Sometimes that can get frustrating because my tendency can be to rush, push, and force. That's why the Holy Spirit has been working with me to get me to relax in life as well as in writing, so I can rest in Him and write what He tells me to write when He tells me to write it.  And in life I can walk with confidence through the doors He opens and stop banging on the ones He has closed.

5 things you love?

My husband
My kids
My family
Sitting up 'til all hours telling funny old stories or watching old sitcoms
And of course, my God Who has saved me from the pit of me trying to accomplish everything on my own strength!

What do you enjoy most about being a published author?

Connecting.  I love talking with readers and other writers, showing them how to relax and trust God, showing them how much He loves them. It is truly one of the biggest honors of my life--that God would allow me to be part of the conversation He wants to have with others.

Right up there with that one is just learning how COOL God is!  He AMAZES me on a daily basis!

Wordless (Kinda) Saturday

Yeah, yeah, I know it doesn't have the same cadence that a "Wordless Wednesday" does, but hey it's Friday night (as I'm writing this) and I've just edited 14 pages. Cut me a wee bit of slack. ;-))

I had such a fun time last weekend. My sister and I hit the road and traveled about 6 hours to spend time with friends and family. Such a great time! Waving to Charity, Uncle Steve and Aunt Cheryl (who talked me into reading The Hunger Games *eyeroll* ;-),and Nanny!

AND I'm so thrilled to say that almost all my family lives in the Pacific Northwest now. Pretty awesome.

AND I got to see Amber!! Love this girl, bunches! I pulled her away from her studies on Sunday afternoon for a few hours of visiting and playing around. We took a few pictures of course...

I took Amber to the Salem Riverfront Carousel, a place where all the horses are handmade and everyone is a volunteer.

Such a fun place!

Amber, I'm sooo glad we were able to get together! Let's plan again for this summer. ;-)

And one last thing...my sister was one of five people asked to perform in our local Arts in Education Concert. A pretty big deal, especially since she was the youngest, most of the performers were seniors in highschool!

Hope you enjoy and hey, while you're watching, I'm going to be playing at the park in the sunshine. Be jealous. Very. :D

(for some reason the video didn't come through yesterday, my apologies!)

Happy Saturday!

Dancing, Dating and Waiting Part 1

Fact: I love to dance.

Truth: I pretty much murder the dance floor.

Confession: I don't know how in the world to dance. Natta. Zip. Zilch. (anyone want to teach me??)

But the other night I had the chance to go with a couple gals to a country dance. Think old ranch families. Loud music. Smooth moves.

And plenty of cuteness.

Now all the mama bears that have watched me "grow up" on my blog and pretty much make sure I stay in line (you know who you are), don't bug out yet. I've got more to post. ;-)
Photo Credit Courtesy of Microsoft Office

I wasn't sure what to expect at the dance. I really didn't know if anyone would ask me and truth be told, I am actually pretty insecure about sitting through entire dances and never being asked. Probably because this has happened to me before.

But the other side of my insecurity? I'd rather hide in the back corner, nibbling my lip and disappear behind the tall old man, then put myself on the edge, waiting for Mr. Cute and Eager to ask me to dance.

What can I say? I have an insecurity complex. Or as one guy told me that night, I live "in a bubble." Yeah, dude, what's your point?

So I stood on the edge of that dance floor, trying not to look obvious. Trying to not cross my arms and appear stiff and unapproachable. All the while hoping with 70% that I would get to dance. And 30% begging for a good excuse to run off and hide.

Did I dance? Yes, I did. And it was so fun. And even learned a simple step... and experienced something I've never had before: the glimpse of hope.

Before you old married folk scoff at me, let me explain. I may be only of an age that doesn't lend a great deal of experience in the "dating" department, but let me just say that  our community holds very little to be desired in the way of possible prospects. At least not of my standards. What little social events I attend, I've never been given a great deal of a second glance. Does this make me vain? I don't let it. Is it discouraging? You betcha.

I know I haven't lived long enough to meet everyone there is to meet. I know I might wait years more. But Saturday night, after dancing four dances, two with different partners, I can say I have a bit more hope now. So often in our world, guys don't seem interested in young women like me. Can anyone else relate? ((♪♫All the single ladies, all the single ladies, put your hands up!♫♪)) So when I got the chance to dance with someone from my own generation, my heart lifted just a little.

Does this mean I have unrealistic expectations now? That in 6 months I'll be married? Um no. Trust me Mama Bears, I've got my head screwed on straight. I speak here to the hearts of the young women waiting on the side lines, scared to put a bit of their desires out there.

There is no harm in wanting to dance. To join the fun and desire a good time. But don't let your swift emotions in that moment of partnership on the dance floor give you unrealistic dreams or expectations. Don't be afraid to allow your heart the freedom to dream. God gives those to us, those desires for a divine purpose. Follow His plan, claim His dreams as your dreams and let yourself dance. You'll be glad you did. Trust me, from this insecure earthly shell... you'll be glad.

**Side note: why the part 1? Because part 2 is my response to the guy who asked for my number. ;-)**

Amazing. Absolutely Amazing. ~ Wildflowers from Winter by Katie Ganshert ~ Review

From the very first line, I knew this would be a novel I would fall in love with. I did that and so much more.

There are so many elements to this story that I loved. A woman with a hidden past, she doesn’t even want to confront, finds herself in the last place she ever wanted to be. And she just might be falling in love
.
The writing is so incredibly strong. The characters grow from the very first page. Subtle twists to the plot keep the story always moving forward. And I wasn’t sure to expect with each new chapter.

It’s the kind of novel I *love* to read. Dialogue that zings, characters that have so much growth to make, but as a reader, I can’t help loving them anyway. A plot that makes a reader so eager to know how it all ends, and yet writing that makes me to want to stop and just savor every word.

In short, I really didn’t want it to end.

Katie Ganshert may be a debut author, but this novel does not read like a debut. Surely she has been holding out on us and there is a published backlist. And yet there is just enough room to grow in her writing, that I know the next book will be even better.

It’s that kind of book. Women’s fiction/romance fans…this book will become your new best read. It’s making my 2012 best list. Easy!

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the author for an advance copy to review.

More about the novel...

A young architect at a prestigious Chicago firm, Bethany Quinn has built a life far removed from her trailer park teen years. Until an interruption from her estranged mother reveals that tragedy has struck in her hometown and a reluctant Bethany is called back to rural Iowa. Determined to pay her respects while avoiding any emotional entanglements, she vows not to stay long. But the unexpected inheritance of farmland and a startling turn of events in Chicago forces Bethany to come up with a new plan.

Handsome farmhand Evan Price has taken care of the Quinn farm for years. So when Bethany is left the land, he must fight her decisions to realize his dreams. But even as he disagrees with Bethany’s vision, Evan feels drawn to her and the pain she keeps so carefully locked away.

For Bethany, making peace with her past and the God of her childhood doesn’t seem like the path to freedom. Is letting go the only way to new life, love and a peace she’s not even sure exists?

Giveaway! Masquerade Marriage and A Texas Christmas Mystery by Anne Greene!

Welcome to Writing for Christ, Anne Greene, it is great to have you here! Do you have an interesting fact about yourself the average reader probably doesn’t know?

I was raised as a neglected child, though my mother did love me, so my life truly began when I was born again and experienced the life-changing love of my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. All that I am or have, I owe to Him. He changes my writing from water into wine.

Do you have a favorite genre to read/write?

I write both historical romance MASQUERADE MARRIAGE, the first of the Scottish Historical Trilogy books and contemporary mystery/suspense like my book A TEXAS CHRISTMAS MYSTERY.

It’s not so strange to write both contemporary and historical because all my books contain suspense, mystery and romance. And these are the two genres I read the most.

Do you have a nugget of writing advice that has completely changed how you view writing?

I wish one nugget had changed me from unpublished to published, but that didn’t happen. There’s so much to the craft of writing that each facet developed little by little as I wrote. However, I’m a seat of the pants author. I was gratified to learn, after difficult forays into story-boarding, character sketches, and plotting that that type of writing didn’t work at all for me. I learned it’s okay not to know what’s going to happen. I love discovering where my characters will take me and how they will solve each dilemma. I love writing myself into a corner and receiving an epiphany to resolve the problem. I love to surprise myself with my endings. For me, that’s the excitement of writing. But I can’t say any one nugget changed how I view writing.

5 things you love?

I love my Lord Jesus who gave me a wonderful new life when I was twenty-one and has never let me down no matter how difficult the circumstances. I love my family, and family always comes first to me after my Lord. I love to write, and even more so since I’m published. I love to travel and have visited twenty-five foreign countries. I love being involved with people. I love to sing and participate in two choirs at my church. And I love art. You can see some of my work on my website, http://www.AnneGreeneAuthor.com.

What do you enjoy most about being a published author?

I love it when my readers tell me they loved my book, whichever one they were reading, and couldn’t put it down. They read until after two in the morning. I love to get feedback on my books.

The Fiddler by Beverly Lewis ~ Review

Cover used by permission
Baker Publishing Group
A sweet, unlikely romance between an Amish man and a “worldly” English woman, these two people have struggles aplenty in their lives.  Told in a gentle, soothing style the novel tells the story of an unlikely romance that just might turn into a very good possibility.

I was actually surprised to find I wasn’t *as* enamored with this novel as I have by previous titles. The plot lagged a bit for me and since the book was basically about Michael and Amelia with very minor subplots, I wasn’t as driven to bury myself in the story.

But I will say I got started on Amish fiction with titles “The Shunning” and its sequels, so to spot names I recognized in “Hickory Hollow” was like coming home just a bit. I smiled and loved catching up with that these famous characters have been up too. Perhaps they will be spotted more in coming novels for this series?

I liked that Amelia was a fiddler and Michael an older Amish young man who still hadn’t joined the church, both struggling to find their way. It’s a different spin on the usual Amish plot line.

While it wasn’t my personal favorite, I really don’t have a doubt that readers will fall in love with these two main characters. They are certainly endearing.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through CFBA for my copy to review.

More about the novel and author...

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
The Fiddler
Bethany House Publishers (April 10, 2012)
by
Beverly Lewis

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Beverly's first venture into adult fiction is the best-selling trilogy, The Heritage of Lancaster County, including The Shunning, a suspenseful saga of Katie Lapp, a young Amish woman drawn to the modern world by secrets from her past. The book is loosely based on the author's maternal grandmother, Ada Ranck Buchwalter, who left her Old Order Mennonite upbringing to marry a Bible College student. One Amish-country newspaper claimed Beverly's work to be "a primer on Lancaster County folklore" and offers "an insider's view of Amish life."

Booksellers across the country, and around the world, have spread the word of Beverly's tender tales of Plain country life. A clerk in a Virginia bookstore wrote, "Beverly's books have a compelling freshness and spark. You just don't run across writing like that every day. I hope she'll keep writing stories about the Plain people for a long, long time."

A member of the National League of American Pen Women, as well as a Distinguished Alumnus of Evangel University, Lewis has written over 80 books for children, youth, and adults, many of them award-winning. She and her husband, David, make their home in Colorado, where they enjoy hiking, biking, and spending time with their family. They are also avid musicians and fiction "book worms."

ABOUT THE BOOK

Come home to Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania--the beloved setting where Beverly Lewis's celebrated Amish novels began--with new characters and new stories of drama, romance, and the ties that draw people together.

A wrong turn in a rainstorm leads Englisher Amelia Devries to Michael Hostetler--and the young Amishman's charming Old Order community of Hickory Hollow. Despite their very different backgrounds, Amelia and Michael both feel hemmed in by the expectations of others and struggle with how to find room for their own hopes. And what first seems to be a chance encounter might just change their lives forever.
