What I've Read: A Heart Most Worthy by Siri Mitchell (review)

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Heart Most Worthy
Bethany House (March 1, 2011)
by
Siri Mitchell
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Siri Mitchell graduated from the University of Washington with a business degree and worked in various levels of government. As a military spouse, she has lived all over the world, including in Paris and Tokyo. Siri enjoys observing and learning from different cultures. She is fluent in French and loves sushi.

But she is also a member of a strange breed of people called novelists. When they’re listening to a sermon and taking notes, chances are, they’ve just had a great idea for a plot or a dialogue. If they nod in response to a really profound statement, they’re probably thinking, “Yes. Right. That’s exactly what my character needs to hear.” When they edit their manuscripts, they laugh at the funny parts. And cry at the sad parts. Sometimes they even talk to their characters.

Siri wrote 4 books and accumulated 153 rejections before signing with a publisher. In the process, she saw the bottoms of more pints of Ben & Jerry’s than she cares to admit. At various times she has vowed never to write another word again. Ever. She has gone on writing strikes and even stooped to threatening her manuscripts with the shredder.

Her ninth novel, A Heart Most Worthy, follows prior Bethany House releases: A Constant Heart (October 2008), Love's Pursuit (June 2009), and She Walks in Beauty (Apr 2010). She Walks in Beauty won the inaugural INSPY Award for Historical Fiction in Dec 2010. Two of her novels, Chateau of Echoes and The Cubicle Next Door were Christy Award finalists. Love's Pursuit was a finalist for the ACFW Carol Award.

Publishers Weekly proclaimed, "Mitchell delivers the historical goods."

ABOUT THE BOOK
The elegance of Madame Forza's gown shop is a far cry from the downtrodden North End of Boston. Yet each day Julietta, Annamaria, and Luciana enter the world of the upper class, working on finery for the elite in society. The three beauties each long to break free of their obligations and embrace the American dream--and their chance for love. But the ways of the heart are difficult to discern at times.
Julietta is drawn to the swarthy, mysterious Angelo. Annamaria has a star-crossed encounter with the grocer's son, a man from the entirely wrong family. And through no intent of her own, Luciana catches the eye of Billy Quinn, the son of Madame Forza's most important client.

Their destinies intertwined, each harboring a secret from their families and each other, will they be found worthy of the love they seek?

My Review:

I am unsure about “A Heart Most Worthy”, not in a negative way, just… unsure…

Let me preface this review by saying I have not met a Siri Mitchell book I have not liked, she has an amazing writing “voice”.

While I enjoyed “A Heart Most Worthy”, I am still kicking around the idea if I liked it enough to read more books in this nature. Allow me to explain. The author employed a writing technique called “omniscient” point of view. Unhindered by space breaks, you jump from one character’s head to the next with little warning.

If I had to read such a book, I would want Siri to do it. There were few stumbling blocks, the reader was almost always warned by a new paragraph and the “head hopping” within characters was done when they shared the same scene.

That said I couldn’t really get “into” the book. I liked the story, the multiply plots all came together- even a few character surprises. You have to be patient at the beginning and become familiar with the multiple players. But the reason for my uncertainty is I am unsure about the omniscient point of view. On one hand I liked it, on the other hand it’s not my favorite way to read.

It’s still a great Siri Mitchell story, I think other readers are going to have to decide for themselves if they like the style of this particular book. I would say the story overall was very good.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through CFBA for my copy to review.

Clothing Your Household in Fine Scarlet (Proverbs 31 series)

She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
Proverbs 31: 20-22

This is one of my favorite parts of the chapter. I love to knit and one of the greatest pleasures I receive from life is seeing my family wearing the things I have made (or wearing them myself.)

As I work the yarn beneath my fingers I think of how this will keep them warm, it won't wear out as easily and as I put time into this project and find joy within it, I know my family will find equal parts joy in wearing it.

It's like taking the time to write a hand written letter instead of a fast email. It carries the weight that you took the time to create a true gift. As I hold that letter from a dear friend in my hands and know she has also touched this piece of paper, I am blessed.

When we give a gift of our hands, our time, we in turn receive such joy. I often think when I read this passage how joyful this woman must have been. Because though she spent all of her time clothing and caring for her family, she did it out of the love in her heart.

What a gift she has given us.

Lord may I go and do the same.

Giveaway and Author Interview: Code of Justice

Welcome to Writing for Christ Liz Johnson, it is great to have you here! Do you have an interesting fact about yourself the average reader probably doesn’t know?

While a lot of my readers have figured out by now that I LOVE football, they might not know that I came in dead last in my fantasy football league this year. My team found injuries I don’t even think doctors knew about, so by half way through the season, I was completely out of the contest.

What surprised you the most about being a published author?

I think letters from readers continues to surprise me more than anything. They’re always unexpected, and I adore hearing from people who enjoyed reading my books nearly as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Do you have a favorite genre to read/write?

Thus far I’m only published in Romantic Suspense, but I’ve written proposals for several other genres. And they all have a common theme. Love. I’ll write nearly anything (I even had an idea for a dystopian futuristic romance) as long as it’s a love story. And that’s pretty much what I read, too. I do read some nonfiction, but mostly fiction. And if there isn’t at least a hint of a love story in a novel, I’m usually a little disappointed.

When you aren’t writing or interacting with fans, what do you enjoy doing?

I work full-time in the book marketing during the day, which keeps me really busy. When I have a spare moment between my day job and my night-time writing, I love going to see Broadway shows, off-Broadway. My goal this year is to see Les Miserables, which I’ve heard is amazing but I haven’t ever seen it. I’m relatively new to the Nashville area, so I enjoy exploring the history of the area as well as the music scene. Both are pretty incredible.

Do you have a nugget of writing advice that has completely changed how you view writing?

I’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of good writing advice, but maybe the best piece of advice (and the one that I often repeat) is that anything worth starting, is worth starting badly. A keynote speaker at a writers conference said that, sharing the example of a company that was on the verge of bankruptcy when a new owner came along. The company was failing, but not because it was a bad idea. It was just being executed poorly. Writing is the same way. A story may be failing, not because it’s a bad idea but because it needs some fixing. And it can be fixed. So when I’m not happy with the way a story starts, I let myself off the hook, remembering that it’s worth starting, even if I do so badly. I can go back in and fix it later.

What do you enjoy most about being a published author?

It’s really a dream come true. There are so many great things about it! But I just can’t beat that rush of holding the finished book in my hands. It’s an incredible, tangible answer to prayer.

What do you like readers to take away from your books?

In each of my books, I try show that God loves us and cares about the details of our hearts. I try to write characters who learn that it’s worth it to trust God to take care of them because He never fails.

Becoming a Hard Working Proverbs 31 Wife

She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously: her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
Proverbs 31:16-19

I will admit to confusion whenever I read this section. Doesn't that seem something a man should do as the head of his household or is it just me that it seems like she is usurping her role a bit here? Then you have to read a bit farther down.

Her lamp never goes out at night.

She is hard worker. She isn't lazy with the hours God has given her. She takes what she does very seriously and in that seriousness is her willingness to make sure her family never lacks anything. She is savvy, she doesn't just let life pass her by.

Work comes in all different forms. No one can be bound by the same rules that applies as far as what job or task you occupy. The homeschooling mom... or do you have to work outside the home?

The importance here is where you are placed at this season in your life, is are you competent at what you are doing? Are you just skating through life with the bare minimum? Or are you genuinely taking the time to learn your task, and doing it with everything within you to honor your position, but also God who placed you there in the first place.

Often we are put in jobs we don't care for. My mom has to work outside the home, the last place she wants to be, but while she is in this position, she learns what she can, she has grown the program, saved them money and knows how to do her job and it's multiple functions.

No matter what position you are in, SAHM (stay-at-home-mom), working outside or something altogether different, do it with every bit of you. Put your heart and soul into it and let your line shine for the One who gave it to you. Be like the woman in Proverbs 31 whose arms are strong, whose lamp never burns out.

The one who gives back to her family in every way she can. Because in that you are giving back to the King.

Spanning Seas and Faith in "Fields of Grace" by Kim Vogel Sawyer (review)

“Fields of Grace” spans seas and countries, tragedies and joys set against a historical prairie backdrop.

The catalyst to the story instantly puts the characters at odds as the Vogts must leave their home country to keep their son from fighting in the army. There isn’t much room for any other choices as their faith propels to go to America, the land of new opportunities.

The first few chapters of the book are heart wrenching. This story reminded me of a combination between Janette Oke’s Love Comes Softly and the story of the prodigal son, but it has deeper themes then those on the surface.

Sawyer does a fabulous job with her faith element, ping ponging her characters beliefs against each other. She goes beyond mere “salvation” and delves into deeper spiritual matters. I can’t go into them all within a short review, but suffice it is to say that my faith is strengthened and uplifted after reading her fiction- she takes it beyond the normal messages in other fiction.

I loved how in the middle of the story the characters are brought together only to be ripped apart before the conclusion (you have to read the book to find out the ending). As I closed the book I had to sigh with pleasure. A lovely weekend read, I encourage you to pick it up.
