Giveaway! Hidden Dreams by Darlene Franklin!

Welcome to Writing for Christ Darlene Franklin, it is great to have you here! Do you have an interesting fact about yourself the average reader probably doesn’t know?

I currently live in a nursing home. I don’t think there are many full-time writer/nursing home resident combinations.

Do you have a favorite genre to read/write?

I love mysteries and I also reading/writing in the historical genre.

Do you have a nugget of writing advice that has completely changed how you view writing?

I have to remind myself of this foundational truth whenever the spectre of professional jealousy (or private disappointment) threatens my peace of mind: God has things for me to write. Only me. I’m the only one who can write certain stories. I can read a terrific book, such as the ones I mention below, and feel like I have no business writing historical fiction. But I have to remind myself that, yes, I do. I don’t have to write like everyone else.

That doesn’t mean a writer shouldn’t listen and read and learn everything p
ossible! Not imitating someone else is not a valid excuse for poor writing.

5 things you love?

My family, including my mother and daughter who wait for me in heaven
Cats, especially my beloved lynx point Siamese Talia
Lord of the Rings
Snowflakes that melt on my mittens
The first Spring rain

What novel have you recently read that has stood out to you that both teens and adults will find enjoyment in?

The Preacher’s Bride by Laurie Kingery struck a high note with me because I wrote about the same area and time period in A Ranger’s Trail but she brought the story, history, and spiritual growth together in a seamless, powerful novel. (Mason and San Saba County, TX, 1865-1875)

No Safe Harbor by Elizabeth Ludwig deals with the broad sweep of history—the two sides of the Irish uprising and their impact on immigrants in New York—through a powerful love story that touches on faith and betrayal.

  2. Much of my immediate family is gone too. I am thankful all of my sons and grandchildren and husband are alive. Grandparents on both sides are gone. That leaves a big hole. I like cats too.

  15. New to me book. I am always looking for authors who write something I can read that isn't trash. I've not read any nursing home writers before. That could be a story in itself.
