Author Interview and Book Giveaway: White Roses

Shannon Taylor Vannatter received over 200 rejections before hitting publication, proving that anyone can do it, if they have the willingness to learn and the ability to write. Her writing has received several awards, including 2nd place in the RWA’s 2007 Touched by Love contest. Her first book, White Roses releases in May, 2010 and will be followed by White Doves and White Pearls in October, 2010 and January, 2011 respectively. I am pleased to present an interview I had with Shannon recently on the writing craft.

Thank you for taking the time to visit us today! I appreciate you taking the time to answer these few questions, letting us get to know you better.

1: How long did you write before you were published?
Nine long frustrating years.

2: When you held that first book in your hands, what was your first thought?
Thank you, God! Teary-eyed, I clutched it to my heart and thanked Him.

3: What do you find the hardest part about writing?
Deadlines and my first content edit. My editor is great and her comments were right on. The book will be better because of her insight. She saw all the things and more, that I missed because I was too close to the work. I’m hoping I’ll be less stressed as I get used to it all. But my first content edit was like pulling all my hair out and then trying to stick it back in and make it look good. I was so worried I’d make changes that stopped the flow of the story or jolted the reader.

4: How do you coordinate time between writing and other responsibilities?
I write while my son is in school and I try not to do anything else during those hours. I treat it like a full time job. In the summer, I usually get two days in a week, when he’s at a friend’s or a grandparent’s house and I stay up after everyone else is in bed and get in a few hours each night. I try not to write when my son is home and awake. He’s only 8, but he’ll be gone before I know it.

5: What are you working on now?
I’ve completed book 2, White Doves and turned it in. I should get the content edit on it soon. Book 3, White Pearls, is finished and my critique partners have it now. Once I get their comments, I’ll go over it one more time and turn it in by my deadline, June 1. Then I’m taking June off, as far as any new projects anyway. By July, I’ll be ready to think of my next series. I’m torn, I have a rodeo series and a trade length second time around romance. I’ll have to decide which to focus on.

6: Where can readers find out more about your books?
 http://www.shannonvannatter.com/  or http://www.heartsongpresents.com/

7: What message(s) do you want to be clear to your readers?
Love doesn’t conquer all, God does. You can find the greatest man on earth, but if the two of you don’t invite God into the center of the relationship, it will never be what it could be and it may not last.

8: Why did you chose this profession?
I got tired of trying to find clean romances to read, so I decided to write one. The more I wrote, the more my characters prayed and went to church. I didn’t know there was an inspirational market until I borrowed a Market Guide from the library. At the same time, my husband was a youth director. I thought inspirational romances would be a great witness to nonbelievers.

Thank you for being with us today. Any final words for readers?
My prayer has always been for Christians to enjoy my books and feel uplifted, and maybe even receive insight into something they struggle with. I’d like them to loan my books to their nonbeliever friends, so together we can plant seeds.

Book Review: Predator

There is a reason Terri Blackstock’s name is synonymous with suspense, and PREDATOR is that reason. This is the best suspense book I have ever read.

When a young girl is murdered after leaving her personal information on a networking site, her sister is determined to trap the killer and bring him to justice.

This book really hits home. Being on the internet a lot myself, I am pretty careful about what I say, but this book made me look at my favorite sites even closer.

But beyond a good lesson, the story was gripping from cover to cover. I couldn’t put this book down. The actions on the page transposed to the screen of my mind where I could see it all unfold.

The characters were well portrayed and spoke to my heart. Especially when Krista struggles with her faith after losing her sister.

I figured out the villain about half way through, but it didn’t take away from the pleasure of finding out I was right in the end. The suspense kept me flipping pages at an alarming rate and my heart beating fast.

Truly the BEST book written by Terri Blackstock that I have read and I highly recommend it to suspense readers!!

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through CFBA for my copy to review.

CFBA Tour & Book Review: A Matter of Character

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

A Matter Of Character

Zondervan (May 25, 2010)

by

Robin Lee Hatcher

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Robin Lee Hatcher discovered her vocation as a novelist after many years of reading everything she could put her hands on, including the backs of cereal boxes and ketchup bottles. The winner of the Christy Award for Excellence in Christian Fiction (Whispers from Yesterday), the RITA Award for Best Inspirational Romance (Patterns of Love and The Shepherd's Voice), two RT Career Achievement Awards (Americana Romance and Inspirational Fiction), and the RWA Lifetime Achievement Award, Robin is the author of over 50 novels, including Catching Katie, named one of the Best Books of 2004 by the Library Journal.

Robin enjoys being with her family, spending time in the beautiful Idaho outdoors, reading books that make her cry, and watching romantic movies. She is passionate about the theater, and several nights every summer, she can be found at the outdoor amphitheater of the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, enjoying Shakespeare under the stars. She makes her home outside of Boise, sharing it with Poppet the high-maintenance Papillon

ABOUT THE BOOK

It's 1918, and Daphne McKinley, heiress to a small fortune, has found contentment in the town of Bethlehem Springs, Idaho. But Daphne has a secret.

A series of dime novels loosely based on local lore and featuring a nefarious villain known as Rawhide Rick has enjoyed modest popularity among readers. Nobody in Bethlehem Springs knows the man behind the stories ... except Daphne.

When newspaperman Joshua Crawford comes to town searching for the man who sullied the good name of his grandfather, Daphne finds herself at a crossroads, reassessing the power of her words, re-thinking how best to honor her gifts, and reconsidering what she wants out of life.

Robin is conducting a contest for the new book. Join in the fun HERE.

If you would like to read the Prologue and first Chapter of A Matter Of Character, go HERE.

My Review:
A novel about a novelist. A fun story premise.

Daphne McKinley writes under a pseudonym and her dime novels are getting some upset feedback from a man claiming she is defaming the name of his grandfather.

Being a writer myself, I enjoyed this novel about a woman in the 20th century, trying to make her way in the world of dime novels. Her determination and love for writing makes her unique in the multitude of books I have read this year.

Her relationship with the hero quickly grows from his anger when he finds out she is the author, to a loving relationship, but the trials do not end there. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I won’t continue. Just to say that I enjoyed how it all came together.

The book, though not long in page number, is not a book to quickly breeze through. And once you really enter the world of the characters, it becomes an enjoyable read

This was my first book by this author and I am looking forward to more.

A note to the reader: though this is book three in the series, it easily stands on its own.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through CFBA for my copy to review.

Modesty- A Matter of the Heart Part 3- Closing Thoughts

Here is part of my last interview that I had with fellow blogger, Adam from One Texan's View.

Why do you as a young man value modesty?
Well I strive to keep my mind body and soul pure. The Lord say's the lust is a sin, it say's in Matthew 5:28 "But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." So it says even the thought is the same as the real thing. In 1John 2:16 For all that is in the world, and the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
God call's us to be Christ like, So why do I value Modesty well when I was about 13 years old I made a promise to God and my future wife, that I will stay sexually pure for my future wife and that I would even save my first kiss for the day when she walks down the aisle dressed in white. And God has shown me that I can't do this on my own I need His help. Every step of every day.

When I see young lady dressing modesty it is a great encouragement to me and others, why? While I'm striving to be more like Christ and avoid the lusts of this world I'm being attacked everywhere I go, at the stores out in the streets by temption. When a woman dress's herself modestly and is striving to please the Lord, she is not only obeying God. She is protecting her own purity as well as protecting other men's eye's and heart's.

What kind of responsibilities do you believe young men bear?

Our clothing should reflect the holiness of God and minimize the "macho" and lewd characteristic's of the ungodly men of this world. For the christian gentlemen stylishness should not be the primary focus, but rather dressing that reflects dignity and godliness. Men should dress modestly to.

"And whatsoever you do in word in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God and the Father by him." Col 3:17.

How do you protect yourself and how do you wish young women would assist in that protection?
If there are thing that bring me down in my commitment I pray the Lord will give me the wisdom and strength to know what to turn off and avoid, like the movies I watch, Music I listen to, the people I hang out with, this is still a very hard part for me. There's a quote or maybe it's in the Bible I don't know but it put's it very well "If the people you hang out with make you cling to Jesus more tightly that's good but if they cause you to stumble and fall that's not good"

"Living a pure life before God requires the team work of your heart and your feet. The direction of purity begins within; You must support it in practical everyday decisions of where, when and with whom you choose to be with."

'The path you take with your feet should never contradict the conviction of your heart."

Joshua Harris from his book I Kissed Dating Good Bye

You are helping by dressing modestly Yes it's that much of an ENCOURAGEMENT...

Casey here again. Thank you Adam for taking the time to do this interview. It is wonderful to see young men out there that value modesty. YOU are an encouragement to US!

I wanted to close this series with a few thoughts of my own.

Modesty and purity are matters of the heart and that does not end when the "I Do's" are said. It is only beginning. Standing strong by your mate to encourage and support him as he battles the world is just as necessary as the young women helping protect young men from temptation.

But like one commenter said on Tuesday, we are not responsible for the young men when they stumble. And that is right. We as women should not feel guilty or worry that we "seduced" a young man that stumbled. If you are following God's precepts and dressing with modesty and care, then you are standing strong and the young man (or older man) needs to fall on his knees before the throne of Grace and ask for help.

We have seen a great deal of encouragement lately and this is exactly why I wanted to have this series. To show women the hearts of some of today's men. I will be the first to say that these men are not in the majority, but fear not-- they are out there. And with the guidance of your Heavenly Father, the right one will find his way into your heart.

I want to speak to the hearts of the young women reading this today: God knows the proper time. The young men are out there. NEVER GIVE UP. With each passing day you are not becoming more hopeless in finding a mate, you are growing in your faith and God is preparing you for marriage, don't ever doubt that.

I want to speak to the hearts of the young men reading this today: God has created you to be the spiritual leader of the home and head of the household. Continue to grow, continue to lean on God and understand His ways and precepts. And continue to hold yourself to purity and standards of modesty. Because more than anything else, YOU are the reason we as women stand strong and with God's help may we be prepared to share a life together.

Thank you to everyone who attended this series with me. It has been an incredible journey and one I am so glad God pushed me to discover. It has been wonderful sharing it with you.

A parting message from the Word:

"Marriage should be honored by all, and the the marriage bed kept PURE, for God will judge the adulterer and the sexually immoral...So say with confidence, the Lord is my helper: I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" Hebrews 13:4,6

Modesty- A Matter of the Heart Part 2

Today I am pleased to share an interview I had with fellow blogger, Josh Regan from While I'm Waiting. I wanted to see what Godly young men thought of modesty, so is our interview...

Why do you as a young man, value modesty?

As a young man committed to physical and emotional purity for my future wife, a woman dressing modestly is a help to me. It keeps me from having to look away from the immodesty and promiscuity making life just a little easier! My future wife will thank the ladies who dressed modestly so as not to cause a stumbling block. A woman who dresses modestly shows not only that she is aware and cares for the heart of men, but also she cares about her husband and is staying faithful to him by not revealing herself to others. Thank you to each woman out there who dresses with propriety and modesty.

So many young women like to flaunt their bodies for attention. How do you avoid it when we are surrounded by it everywhere?

It is very difficult to avoid all the immodesty when it is simply everywhere. However, daily prayer regarding the matter and asking God to protect my eyes and heart as I go out is key. Gratefully, I have a momma and six sisters who are aware of ladies who are dressed immodestly and immediately let me know “Don’t look over to you left!” or something similar. Because of my passion for keeping my heart, mind, and soul pure before God and for my future wife (if the Lord wills), when I see a woman dressed immodestly, I divert my eyes and look else where. If I find myself in a situation where I am in a group with an immodestly dressed woman, I may excuse myself discreetly. Another option: dismissing myself was not appropriate at a wedding I recently attended, so I strategically placed myself so I was not face to face with immodesty.

Can modesty be taken too far, become an obsession in your opinion?

Modesty is an issue of the heart. In our family, we have traveled the journey of being more focused on the outward appearance of modesty and overlooking the heart of modesty. I don’t know if modesty was an “obsession”, but it did seem to become it’s own law: an idol in itself.

“But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.” Romans 7:6

We as Christians, should be living in the Holy Spirit and following His leading. The focus of modesty is to please the Lord through our dress, it is not about the law.

What does it mean to you when you see young women modestly clothed?

When I see women, young and old alike, who are dressing modestly, I want to go right up and thank them. First, they are following what they find in scripture and seeking to be obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

“In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation…” 1 Timothy 2:9

Second, by dressing modestly, they are protecting the young men who might otherwise fall into lust and sin. By not being a stumbling block to young men, they are protecting them, as well as saving themselves for their future husband.

If you could talk with the lost young women of today’s society, what would you want them to know? Besides salvation or the need for Christ, what would you tell them about how they dress and what it communicates?

Men are wired visually. God made us that way. When a woman is dressed immodestly and flaunting her body, this causes a huge problem for a man. Men are drawn to the figure of a woman’s body, and when ladies are showing everything, this is prime opportunity to lust. Lust is no small issue. Matthew 5:28 says:

”But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Adultery! That is what lust is. Whether or not women admit to this, they know when they are dressing to attract attention and at a minimum, visually seduce a man. It hurts my heart because they are causing big trouble for men. Men are being defiled because of the way women are dressing. Most guys like the “easy girls”, but for a young man who is saving himself for his future wife and striving to lead a life of purity, this is damaging and unappreciated… For a married man who is living faithfully to his wife and guarding his heart against the seductions of the world, having immodest women all over is potentially damaging and unappreciated!

On a note to the women: dressing to attract male attention is not what your heart really yearns for. Dressing for men to admire you is shallow and will leave you empty. You are attracting the wrong attention. Men who are attracted to you or pretend to “love” you based on your ability to visually seduce them are not men worth having. Their “love” is not true love and is cheaper than the penny tucked inside your pocket. These men are not worth a dime per dozen. Their love has nothing to do with who you are as a person, but about pleasing themselves. Seek modesty! Clothe yourself modestly! Love is not based on looks, but on the person beneath the looks.

Being pure plays a HUGE role in modesty, but not everyone is committed, why are you?

God created the relationship between a man and a woman to be sacred. The world has turned sex into cheap fulfillment and temporary pleasure.

Genesis 2:24 says:

“Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Becoming one flesh isn’t something to take lightly. It is between ONE man and ONE woman! If God brings me a wife in the future, I certainly don’t want her to be one flesh with another man. And likewise, what woman wants a man who has been joined to another woman?

“..but be an example to the believers in the word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity…” 1 Timothy 4:12

“Do not commit adultery” Exodus 20:14

In 1 Corinthians 6:18, Paul says: “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.”

Read the last half of 1 Corinthians chapter 6. Also, read 1 Corinthians chapter 7 and Matthew 5:27-32. Do a study on purity and sexual immorality in your Bible. Read what it has to say in God’s Word.

Cheap relationships, unfaithfulness, and broken hearts are an epidemic in our culture today. I see the damage that it causes. I see the emptiness as a result. I don’t want that for me or my future wife. I want a wife who has saved herself for her husband alone, who has protected her innocence, her heart, and her purity. Likewise, I am determined to give no less. By God’s grace, I am blessed to have parents who support and encourage living in purity. They have guided me and taught me in the way of the Lord, and been my earthly counselors.

I think of myself as a knight in a world full of evil: battling to keep myself from being corrupted and overcome by the sin of the world, pressing on to save a lady who is waiting patiently to be rescued. She has kept herself dutifully from being swayed by the forces of sin, and I want to be worthy of her.

You are obviously not just mouthing the words, you honestly believe them. Why are you so passionate on this topic?

The answer to this question lies in all the other answers shared. Basically, God is passionate about purity and modesty and so am I. The words “modesty” and “purity” ought not be confused with contemporary, youth-group buzz words like “virginity” and “abstinence”. Virginity is not the same thing as purity. Young men and women today can use those words, but they merely reflect something on the outside. Modesty and purity however, reflect the heart. It is real to me and needs to be real for all of us…we need to encourage one another because it is a lie to think that you can be pure while dressing immodestly. A lady who says she is pure, yet does not dress herself modestly and with propriety cannot be taken seriously or respected. What is on the outside is merely a reflection of the inside. Immodesty is greatly impacting our culture today. Each day, God presses deeper in my heart the need for modesty in our world, and the passion grows as a result. Consider God’s holy Word. Take a stand to dress modestly for the sake of honoring the Lord Jesus, and practice “…doing good (to your husband) all the days of your life”…starting now! (Proverbs 31:12)

WOW, I don't know about you, but if ever anything made me want to continue to dress the way I do and live my life with purity and integrity, this is the interview.

I want to thank Josh for taking the time to do this interview with me, you have inspired me alone.

Tomorrow will be another interview with fellow blogger, Adam from One Texan's View. This will conclude my series on Modesty- A Matter of the Heart. Until then I want to leave you with this parting message from the Word.

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. Proverbs 31:10-12

May we as future wives and wives to your husbands take this to heart and be a woman/ wife of noble character who takes care in how she presents her body.

Modesty- A Matter of the Heart

What does it mean to be pure and modest on all counts? And just where does it start?

When I dress, I choose clothing that is concealing, not revealing. Not only have I been raised to be modest, I believe in my heart and soul that God wants me to save myself in every way for my future husband.

Why show the merchandise if it isn’t for sale? That is the problem with girls in today’s society. They long to be noticed, accepted and they try to show off those “assets” to garner attention. But the guys that are going to be attracted to that are the last ones you want to be around. They have no respect for your body; they just want what you are selling.

Being pure and modest is an issue of the heart as well as the body.

I don’t flaunt my body, I don’t ask for that kind of attention, but it seemed I never saw a response for my efforts. But I don’t know that. There is no way of knowing that. Then God opened my eyes. I was blog hopping and came across a couple of young men that appreciate modesty and they are only two of many. Do you know what that means to me? I can talk all day long about being pure and modest and mean every word of it, but when I see that someone out there values it, it pushes me to continue down this path.

Christ never promised it would be easy.

Being modest is hard in today’s society. Everywhere you turn you see inappropriate clothing and scantily clothed bodies. It is never ending! But that is where the verse, in this world but not of it plays a huge role.

You don’t have to wear a bonnet and cape dress to be modest. You don’t have to wear skirts seven days a week-- clothing can turn into a religion. Instead dress in tasteful layers. Clothing that fits and doesn’t shift south when you move. I never said you had to look frumpish to be modest.

What you do need to wear is a pure heart before the King of Kings. True modesty doesn’t start on the outside, it is a matter of the heart. You can be completely covered, but if you are begging for attention, it will shine through your attitude.

What a relief it is on the eyes and the spirit when I see modest, tasteful dressing. You can spot it a thousand yards away.

True modesty is an issue of the heart as much as the clothing you wear. The love of Christ will shine through your life and all outward appearances will be a reflection of that inner spirit. And the young man or even your husband that is waiting for you, will see that modesty for what it truly is: inner beauty.

Tomorrow is Part 2 with an interview with fellow blogger, Josh Regan on why he values modest young women, but until then I leave you with this parting message:

Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is PURE, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things. Philippians 4:8

Interview with author Kim Vogel Sawyer on the Craft of Writing

I am so thrilled to share an interview that I had the great privilege of having with author, Kim Vogel Sawyer recently. Here is the welcoming from her website, I think it sums Kim up well:

As an author of inspirational Christian fiction, it is my goal to create stories that will edify God's children and offer evidence of the hope we can all possess when we place our hearts and souls in God's very capable hands.

I've been asked..."Why fiction?" And the answer is simple: Even Jesus told stories to help His followers understand Who He was and His purpose for coming to earth. A story can draw one in and make an impact. Before I commit words to paper (or computer!), I spend time in God's Word and in prayer. I believe my stories aren't truly "mine," but are a joint effort between myself and the God I serve.

And now, here is our interview!

1: How long did you work on your writing before you were published?
Are you ready for this? I began writing seriously in 1981. I began submitting manuscripts in 1992. I stopped submitting manuscripts in 1995 because rejection was far too painful. In 2002, my dad insisted I try again and I still refused, so he self-published one of my novels. Reader feedback gave me the courage to once again pursue traditional publication. In 2003, I signed with an agent, and in March of 2005 I signed my first contract; in November of 2005 I signed my tenth contract! So although the journey was long, when the door opened, God pretty much drop-kicked me into publishing. lol

2 What are two mistakes you wish you had never made?
I wish I hadn't let the disappointment of rejection become disaster. Those years of no-writing, although years of joy in many ways thanks to motherhood and teaching wonderful fifth graders, left an empty place in my heart. I regret allowing my fear of rejection to prevent me from working toward something that meant so much to me. I also wish I had come to the realization sooner that God planted the dream in my heart and therefore the writing needed to be done for Him rather than for my own pleasure. Once I committed my writing to Him, the joy was doubled...even without contracts. There is pleasure beyond description when one seeks to glorify God rather than self.

3: What resources did you find the most helpful for learning the craft?
I am sooooo grateful I stumbled upon a group called--in 2002--American Christian Romance Writers (now American Christian Fiction Writers: http://www.acfw.com/ ). I've received so much from that organization. I gained knowledge in the craft of writing, critique partners and prayers warriors, an agent...and eventually, publication. This is a group that grows writers. I'm thrilled to steer aspiring writers to ACFW where I know they'll be given the same wonderful teaching I received.

4: How does an author "find their voice"?
By writing. I know that sounds simplistic, but truly--the more you write, the more you develop your own style.

5: How do you protect your writing time?
It's taken some time for my family to make the transition from "this is what wife/Mom does for fun" to "this is what wife/Mom does for a living." But I think we're finally there. If I don't get my writing hours in, I don't meet deadlines, so I've had to treat writing as my job, because that's what is it.

6: What are the most common mistakes beginning writers make?

Too much backstory is the most common error I've seen when critiquing others' works. (Start with the conflict--the story--and drizzle in backstory as it's needed to understand the current conflict.) The second most common error is what I call "detail dumps." We need sensory details in stories to bring the setting to life, but if the description stops the story, then it's too much all at once.

7: What is something you wished you had known before you started writing?
I wish I'd known how much time gets eaten up with non-writing aspects of publishing. I was so silly--I thought I would write a story, turn it in, and the publisher would print it just as I submitted it. But there's editing, and then reading galleys, and participating in marketing... All of those things are necessary, but they are time-consuming. Since I'd always written for my own pleasure on my own timetable, meeting all of these obligations was quite a shock. lol

8: Why did you choose this profession?
To be honest, I'm not sure I made an active decision to be a writer--it is a desire that was always a part of me. I told my kindergarten teacher that someday people would check out my books in the library. Of course, as a 5-year-old, I had no idea 40 years would pass before that dream became reality! But God did some amazing things along the way, and His timing was perfect.

9: What advice/ encouragement do you have for the writers reading this today?
If God has placed the desire to write within you, then write. Even when it's hard and you feel like you're getting no where, write. He has a purpose for what He calls us to do--either for His glory or our good--so heed His voice and write, write, write.

THANK YOU Kim, for the time and attention to put to this interview! Writing is a tough profession and I know from personal experience that any help is always greatly appreciated.

So, readers, was this interview helpful? I would love to hear your thoughts!

CFBA Tour: Predator

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

ABOUT THE BOOK

The murder of Krista Carmichael's fourteen-year-old sister by an online predator has shaken her faith and made her question God's justice and protection. Desperate to find the killer, she creates an online persona to bait the predator. But when the stalker turns his sights on her, will Krista be able to control the outcome?

Ryan Adkins started the social network GrapeVyne in his college dorm and has grown it into a billion-dollar corporation. But he never expected it to become a stalking ground for online Predators. One of them lives in his town and has killed two girls and attacked a third. When Ryan meets Krista, the murders become more than a news story to him, and everything is on the line.

Joining forces, he and Krista set out to stop the killer. But when hunters pursue a hunter, the tables can easily turn. Only God can protect them now.

My Review:

I was supposed to get this book from the publisher and never did. : ( So no review, but I think this book looks really good. Terri Blackstock is my favorite suspense author. Makes my toes curl and I always make sure I am locked into my bed so I don't have to get back up once I start reading her heart pounding fiction. : ) But what I love so much about her fiction are the redemptive themes. It is not just all gore and murder, there is hope at the end of the tunnel with the love of Jesus Christ.

All of Terri's books have been great, so I am sure this one will be too. Hopefully I can read it soon!

Have you read anything by Terri Blackstock? Do you like suspense?

CFBA Tour & Review: Deadly Disclosure

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Deadly Disclosure
New Leaf Publishing Group/Master Books (February 15, 2010)
by

Julie Cave

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Julie first heard a creation science speaker at her church when she was just 15, igniting her interest in creation science and sparking an enthusiasm for defending the Bible’s account of creation. She has obtained a degree in health science, and is currently completing a degree in law. Julie is married with one daughter and lives on the east coast of Australia.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Suspense-filled mystery which answers an ominous question: How far will some go to silence an influential Christian voice?

Thomas Whitfield, proud Secretary of the Smithsonian and its extensive scientific influence, has disappeared from his office with foul play suspected. Dinah Harris, an FBI agent struggling with alcohol and depression, is seeking answers amidst the fallout of her own personal issues.

Whitfield's body is eventually found, and other people connected to him begin dying as well, ultimately exposing a broader conspiracy connected to Whitfield's recent conversion to Christ and promotion of a biblical worldview in an academic world of financial gain hostile to this concept.

Will Dinah be able to experience the redemptive power of Christ before it's too late? Or will the ominous danger stalking her investigation claim another victim?

If you would like to read the first chapter of Deadly Disclosure, go HERE.

My Review

The premise of the novel grabbed my attention. A murder mystery wrapped up in the creation/evolution argument. This is a vast argument in our society today and I wanted to know just how the book was going to come about.

But the novel just did not follow through. The arguments presented in the book were factual and I agreed with everything said, but they came across as preachy. I felt inundated with sermons that would have been more potent if sprinkled throughout the story. The mystery itself was gripping, but after a while it got kind of gruesome and in some cases hard to follow. There was quite a bit of jumping around and “head hopping.” A writer’s term for jumping from one character’s head to another with no warning to the reader.

This book had potential to be a great book with a powerful message, but this novel wasn’t in my opinion, the best way to go about it.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publisher through CFBA for my copy to review.

Congrats to the Genesis Finalists!

I know I am a bit behind posting this, but I wanted to add my congratulations to other many voices for the 2010 ACFW Genesis Finalists! I know you all must be thrilled.

I don't know if any of  you remember that I entered this contest in the Historical Romance division. Well, I didn't final. I must say I have mixed feelings about that. In a way I am very grateful I did not final. The first few pages of that manuscript I sent in was just not ready (the manuscript not the pages). This contest is so prestigious that often just by finaling editors will seriously look at it. And the last thing I wanted to do was have to turn an editor or agent down because my work wasn't ready. So, God knows best. I am trusting Him for that and am so thrilled for the finalists, God has everything planned in His time!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Revell Blog Tour and Book Review: This Fine Life

THIS FINE LIFE gives a charming glimpse into the 1960’s lifestyle, but also depicting the turmoil that lies below the surface for one young couple.

The story is a passionate romance- never inappropriate- the love between Mariette and her husband Thayne is blood warming, but does have its pitfalls. Watching Mariette and Thayne mature and grow through the story kept me rooted to the pages and I liked seeing them progress from self centered, impulsive teenagers.

I had a deep empathy for Mariette as she tries to find her footing and support her preacher husband when the town has great distaste for her. Her faith journey kept the story moving forward and me invested in her welfare.

There were a few things I didn’t care for in the book. Several scenes were overly dramatic. I have never known a man to run to his bed and hide under the covers and because the story is being told in retrospect, some of the story felt detached.

But the overall story kept my attention. It gripped me in several scenes and had me laughing in others. I loved the era and it was an enjoyable read.

This review is my honest opinion, Thanks to Revell publishes for a copy to review.

Author Interview and Book Giveaway: The Heart's Journey Home

Jen Stephens grew up in a small Ohio town where she developed a passion for writing at an early age. She participated in Young Authors contests in grade school, wrote her first novel in high school, and wrote dozens of poems and short stories in between. She majored in elementary education with a concentration in English and the humanities at the University of Toledo.

Jen lives in the Nashville, Tennessee, area with her husband and two beautiful daughters. She teaches third grade at a Christian school and is very active with the youth in her church. A member of Middle Tennessee Christian Writers, American Christian Fiction Writers, and Nashville Christian Writers Association, she writes in her “spare” time. Her first novel, The Heart’s Journey Home, released in February 2010.

1: How long did you write before you were published?

I’ve been writing since I was in grade school. My first story was about a boy who befriends an Indian chief and together they capture a burglar who breaks into the boy’s house. I was (and still am) a slow reader with a very active imagination, so I didn’t do a lot of reading as a child, but I was always making up stories. I wrote my first novel when I was in junior high and another one in tenth grade. I took a break from it while I was in college and gradually returned to it after I got married eleven years ago. I’ve been writing—and working on honing my craft—ever since. I discovered that I was a writer at a young age, but didn’t know I could do anything with it until just a few years ago.

2: When you held that first book in your hands, what was your first thought?

That’s a funny story. I was on the phone with a friend who was helping me plan my release party when the UPS guy brought it to my door so my 6-year-old got it and brought it to me. Now you have to know that it’s a strictly enforced rule in my house that my daughters don’t open the door for ANYONE so my very first thought was that Olivia shouldn’t have opened the door. Then it sank in and my two girls and I happy danced in our living room for quite a while.

3: What are you working on now?

The second book in the Harvest Bay Series, The Heart’s Lullaby. It’s about two things I care deeply about – kids and our United States military.

4: Where can readers find out more about your books?

http://www.jenstephens.ne/ t, http://www.sheafhouse.com/ , http://www.amazon.com/,  http://www.barnesandnoble.com/,  http://www.christianbook.com/

5: What message(s) do you want to be clear to your readers?

I want those who read The Heart’s Journey Home to feel sense of hope above all else. I want this book to clearly illustrate Romans 8:28, that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” The key words here, I believe, are “His purpose”. God has a plan and a purpose for our lives that often may not be what we expect, but is ALWAYS perfect. It’s when we put our hope and trust in Him that we can see that.

6: What are two things that people wouldn't normally know about you as a writer and or person?

I’m really an open book . . . and I’m boring. I don’t think there’s too much that my readers don’t know about me, but let’s see. Here are the first 5 of the 25 Random Tidbits on the Getting to Know Me page of my website: 1. I was born and raised near Sandusky, Ohio. It was great except for in the summertime when Cedar Point opened and traffic was a nightmare! 2. I am second out of four girls, and my three sisters are also my very best friends! 3. My school was so small I went to grades K-12th all in the same building. A breezeway separated the elementary from the high school. I LOVED it! 4. I have been married to Chris for 11 years! We never really dated. He already lived in Nashville and I was still in Ohio. We decided we liked each other in September, got engaged in December, and married the very next December! 5. We have two beautiful little girls - Alison (8) and Olivia (6) - who are exact opposites. Ali has long straight hair and Livi has tight corkscrew curls . . . and that's just where the differences begin! But they are my very biggest blessing in my life!

Thank you for being with us today. Any final words for readers?

Thank you for hosting me, Casey! The Heart’s Journey Home is very special to me, and I hope and pray that whoever reads it will be as touched as I was writing it. I believe that many of the scenes were Spirit-led because of the way it flowed and the way I felt as I wrote them. This is NOT my biography, but I come from a blended family and my Daddy went home to be with the Lord nine years ago, so in many ways writing this book was an emotional release for me. I pray that my readers can sense even a fraction of that emotion.

Will You Pray, Please?

I have a prayer request for you all when God places this on you heart.

My friend and fellow writer on The Writer's Alley, Krista Phillips is due to have a beautiful baby girl in just a few short months. But recent news have revealed that the baby's heart is not in the best shape and will need surgery soon after birth.

This precious daughter will join three older sisters and be raised in a godly family, but I know that both Krista and her family would greatly appreciate the prayer for their daughter's health and the grace and peace for her parents.

Thank you for keeping Krista in your thoughts and prayers.

Have a wonderful weekend and don't forget to truly praise God in every moment.

Book Review: Hearts Awakening

HEARTS AWAKENING is the perfect title for this novel. It fulfills its meaning to the utmost.

One woman desperate for refuge and a man in need of a helpmate for his boys. Could you imagine signing a contract for the job of marriage? That is exactly what happens when these characters enter into a loveless relationship.

I thought this a good story. There were moments of frustration when the hero flew into a temper without consulting the problem first, but in those moments true characterization was formed and the heroine’s stalwart strength kept me vested.

The intrigue that was woven through the novel kept me interested and wanting to know what would happen to the characters. Some of the different angles to the story haven’t been addressed often in that era and I enjoyed the glimpse this book gave. I admired the heroine for her resilience in the face of accusation. She was truly my favorite character and while growing herself, brought the family together.

The novel moved forward and kept me interested. I would have liked a faster pace and more romance, but all in all it kept me interested and I enjoyed the characters. The ending was all the novel promised and more without feeling rushed. An enjoyable book.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to Bethany House Publishers for my copy to review.

Book Review: Disaster Status

This book didn’t even make it to my “to be read” pile. It came straight from the bubble wrap and into my hot little hands.

What a novel! Medical dramas, can’t even compare to DISASTER STATUS. I had the distinct feeling of standing in the middle of a trauma ward as everyone rushed around me. You don’t have to understand medical terms to know what is going on. But this book wasn’t just medical disasters, it was a love story and a story of life outside of trauma that made it jump to life.

There was a very real sense of immediacy throughout the entire novel. I felt like I was there and found it nearly impossible to stop reading. Making this probably the fastest book I have ever read, in just under 6 hours.

The characters were unique, coming alive on the page. I saw their growth. I cheered and I groaned. There was intrigue and action. Drama and love, but not the sappy inappropriate soap opera kind, the kind that makes you stand up and cheer or curl your toes in anxiety.

I can no longer watch medical dramas on TV. Only give me DISASTER STATUS and plenty of time to read!

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to Tyndale publishers for my copy to review.

I Have Found the Models for My WIP!

WIP as in Work In Progress. As in my new novel. : )

I have been busy working on my second novel. I don't want to give too much away, because it ruins the thrill for me as I am writing it, but I have taken on a new step in my writing and I wanted to share it with you.

I am working on a contemporary this time around and decided I needed models. Not just the kind that I can dream up in my head and that works great too, but a constant picture of who is "playing" the physical role in my story. So, since I didn't have to worry about historical accuracy or hair styles or dress, I surfed through Google Images (a fabulous resource, check it out if you haven't already) to find the perfect actor/actress to play my hero and heroine. I think I found them! Let me know what you think. : )

Kimberly Williams-Paisley as my heroine: Jenna. A strong woman, who feels she has never truly been loved. And because of that has made some pretty sorry choices in her life. I am so excited for her, to see her grow and change. This story has me eager to write. Something that hasn't happened in a long time.

Hmmm, I looooove Logan Bartholomew's soulful eyes and he really fits the mental image I have of my hero, Greg. A very introvertive person, quiet, but you don't want to get on his bad side. Very much like my hero.
I love having these pics handy for looking at my main characters. It is really helpful because instead of a bunch of notes that I need to keep track of, I have a handy photo to refer to. Every detail about them that I need to know is right at my fingertips.

Who do you have modeling for your current WIPS?

Revell Blog Tour and Book Review: It Had to Be You

This is a series to remember. The kind that will never leave my keeper shelves and will be reread over and over again.

IT HAD TO BE YOU is the spectacular conclusion to a thrilling series. Bella and the Rossi clan have thoroughly wormed themselves into my heart and Bella’s hunky cowboy is her perfect match. Bella’s warmth and genuine personality gives all young women (and the young at heart) that a fairy tale love is so very possible.

Not one but two weddings are being planned in this fun loving book and the trials are far from over. I love the light hearted spin a normally stressful situation would have. Bella has the remarkable ability to draw the reader in and make them a character right along with her. Nothing sappy about what she does, only a pure and lovable romance.

I will miss joining in on the fun and am sorry to see the series come to an end, which in my opinion is the mark of a truly wonderful book- or in this case books. But I take comfort knowing that Bella is only a page turn away, in three of my favorite books of all time, WEDDINGS BY BELLA!!

This review is my honest opinion, Thanks to Revell publishes for a copy to review.
